I only had mine for about a week before this update bricked it. But yes, I think it's a great device for the price ($130ish CAD). I was using a PS3 to stream stuff from an ubuntu/mediatomb NAS before, but there's no native support for.mkv files. You can unpackage an mkv, demux and transcode if necessary, then remux into a standard mpg/mp4 to get PS3 to play it, but I found this to be too much of a hassle.
Like rayhan314, the WDTV has played every crazy file I've thrown at it. It's small, it's quiet, and it takes about one minute to setup (setup = plug into hdmi, plug in power, plug in ethernet, done). It also supports streaming files directly from a samba or cifs share, eliminating the need for a upnp av server like TVersity or mediatomb. Complaints: navigation through long lists of files is done a page at a time rather than the nice smooth scrolling you may be used to if you use XBMC (on whatever device) or a PS3.
Seeking from within a file is. It features only 1x,2x,4x,8x,16x fast forward and rewind. No popcornhour-style seek to 40% through by pressing '4'. No awesome PS3-style seek with thumbnails. Lastly, the internal DAC isn't fantastic.
I play.flac files for audio and these are natively handled (had to transcode on-the-fly using 2pcm for PS3 to handle these, and that removed support for seeking and even pausing). However, they sounded better on the PS3 which has a pretty solid internal DAC iirc.
