I was at my local Golfsmith, and they're running a deal where if you buy a you get a free. Initially, I was just shopping for a 3W, but this deal has me wondering if it's a good enough deal that I should get a new driver as well. Note that I'm a pretty high handicapper, so forgiveness is really helpful.
I'm currently using a Callaway Diablo driver with a draw face, and I can't hit it save my life, although I'm sure it's a good club. I was initially planning to get a 3W and maybe a 5W or a rescue and just ditch my driver altogether. Just looking for some thoughts. Is the Callaway Diablo stuck in the 'draw face' position? Or can it be turned with a tool? If you could get that driver to neutral I would definitely try that first.
Since you're in the golfsmith I would say hit them with the sim machine and see how it feels. Hit other clubs and see how they compare. Then you'll know if its worth it to you. I personally have never hit any macgregor club. FWIW the 3W and 5W are long clubs too and can be just as inconsistent if a solid swing is not in place first!
You can hit anything you want at golfsmith, even if it's not in the hitting bay. Just ask an associate, and if they don't have a demo club, they'll tape the face.
You won't get accurate readings from the sim if you're into ball speed, spin rate, launch angle, etc, but you'll get a feel for the club. I've owned two sets of macgregor irons and a macgregor wedge, but never a wood. They're owned by golfsmith these days, so the equipment is less expensive than 'real' OEMs. You mentioned that you're a high handicapper, so i'd say these are probably a good idea for you since they'll be inexpensive and they'll have decent tech. I would recommend getting a 5w instead of a 3w.
